Welcome to Louanne’s page!
Growing up in East Van in the time before gentrification, homelessness was ever present. With leftover allowances not spent on records, sometimes we bought burgers for nameless troubled regulars we recognized. To our dismay, we noticed some grew sicker and weaker over time, and became more alarmed still when others disappeared from their regular stoops.
For anyone that’s made their way to the Downtown Eastside since the start of the pandemic, you’ll have noticed how much worse it’s become. Old estimates indicate over 3,600 adults and children are homeless on any given night, though I’m certain those numbers have sadly grown.
On November 26th, (if all things go as planned!) I will be participating in the Hockey Helps the Homeless Vancouver Tournament, raising awareness and funding for local homeless support agencies right here in our city.
We may never know the stories behind how people become homeless, but it doesn’t mean that we can’t help. Hockey Helps the Homeless invests in solutions that ensure fewer individuals and families end up on the streets. This charity supports organizations + programs committed to ending homelessness through:
- transportation initiatives,
- mental health support,
- health and wellness, as well as
- training and employment
…and we need your help.
Thank you so much for your consideration in supporting the cause. Together, we can bring hope to our most vulnerable.
My sincere thanks,
